Watch How One AP Chem Teacher Uses Kits to Save Prep Time
High School
Lab days are often where AP Chemistry really clicks for students, but if you’ve ever felt like the prep takes nearly as long as the lab itself, you’re not alone. Between gathering materials, making space for student thinking and problem solving, and managing safety, there’s a lot to consider before the lab even begins.
AP Chemistry educator Jordan Rose shares how she approaches lab planning in her own classroom, including how purpose-built Ward’s Science AP Chemistry Kits can help streamline preparation and set students up for successful investigations.

1. What do you like most about Ward’s Science AP Chemistry Kits?
I like using the AP Chemistry Kits because they create an opportunity for teachers to run laboratory investigations in a safe and efficient way. It can be intimidating, especially for new AP teachers, to see all of the lab components and approaches recommended for the course. The kits provide everything we need to prepare the activities, along with predicted values and sample data, helping ensure that students are set up for successful problem-solving.
2. How do these kits make your job as a teacher easier?
The kits include all the solutions and materials needed for each lab, and they clearly list the materials and equipment not included. This makes it easier for us to decide whether an investigation is realistic for a given classroom space and class period length. One of my favorite aspects is that the kits offer multiple levels of inquiry, allowing me to support or extend student learning as needed. Gradually releasing students into higher levels of inquiry prepares them for rigorous coursework in AP Chemistry and beyond.
3. How do Ward’s Science AP Chemistry Kits align with the AP Chemistry curriculum you teach?
The kits align closely with the AP Chemistry Course and Exam Description. They are matched not only to the labs recommended by the College Board, but they are also numbered to correspond directly with the Guided Inquiry Investigations listed in the CED. Each kit includes standards alignment and highlights key vocabulary that is relevant and important to each investigation.
4. Safety is always a priority in the chemistry lab. How do these kits support a safe lab and classroom environment?
The kits include safety recommendations for students and clear disposal guidance. Teachers are often restricted in what can go down the sink or how waste must be handled, so having specific disposal recommendations removes much of that uncertainty and allows us to focus on student learning. The inclusion of Safety Data Sheets also helps teachers meet district expectations for chemical storage and labeling.
5. How did students respond to working with Ward’s Science AP Chemistry Kits?
Students enjoy working with the kits and benefit from the guided questions that support their learning. Consumable materials are clearly labeled, and the handouts provide procedures aligned to different levels of inquiry, helping students stay on task and meet learning goals. Students, just like teachers, benefit from having solutions and other consumables prepped and ready to go, bringing more confidence and clarity to the experiment.
