Electron Configuration Battleship

Materials:
• 2 Periodic Tables
• 2 Different colored pens/markers
• 1 Manila folder to act as a game board
• Paper clips
Background Information, Activity Setup:
This activity is called Electron Configuration Battleship. Each student will receive the materials listed above. On one of the periodic
tables the students will place their battleships (use a marker to outline the location of the periodic table where their ship will be
placed). The students will place 8 battleships: 3 Destroyers each occupying 2 spaces, 3 Cruisers each occupying 3 spaces, and 2
Battleships each occupying 4 spaces.
Once the students have placed their ships on their Periodic Table, the students will use the 2nd Periodic Table to keep track of their
hits and misses. The students will take turns saying the electron configuration of an element. If their opponent has a ship in that
spot of the element, it would be a "hit". If there is no ship occupying the spot of that element, it would be a "miss". The game can
proceed for an entire class period or more…depending on how long you want the kids to practice electron configurations!
