Knowing the relative positions of electrons within an atom helps scientists understand the chemical behavior of the atom. Placing electrons in certain orbitals and energy levels (especially valence electrons) will determine the chemical stability of an atom. Each atom will emit a particular spectrum of energy based on the relative locations of its electrons. 3. Critical Thinking: How is this concept used in everyday life? Think of fireworks! Fireworks emit light due to the electron configuration of the metal that is used in the firework. Each element is going to release energy (usually in the form of light) causing the sky to light up with an assortment of various colors. As the electrons are going from a higher energy level to a lower energy level, energy/light is released. Each element has a specific color based on its electrons (Sodium—orange/yellow, Potassium—purple, Copper—blue/green, Strontium and Lithium—red/crimson, etc).
