+ ward ' s science Page 1 Ocean Currents and Tides Submitted by: Lauren H. Recommended Grade Level(s): Appropriate for: Grade 6 Time Requirements: Activity Time: 52 minutes Teaching Topics & Concepts: How do ocean currents and tides work together? National Science Standards Alignment ESS.ESS.2: Earth's Systems: 2) Construct an argument based on evidence about how global climate and weather patterns are impacted by interactions among the Sun's energy output, tectonic events, ocean circulation, vegetation, and human activities. ESS.ESS.2: Earth and Human Activities: 12) Engage in an argument from evidence to explain the degree of which oceanic currents function. 13) Use a model to predict how variations in the flow of energy through radiation, conduction, and convection into and out of Earth's systems could contribute to global atmospheric processes and climatic effects. 14) Using data, weather maps, and other scientific tools, predict weather conditions from an analysis of the movement of air masses, high and low pressure systems, and frontal boundaries. Objectives: • Compare tides with the other ocean motions • Analyze the forces that create and affect currents and tides • Evaluate the parts of a wave and weather patterns Materials: • Teacher: Lesson plans, textbook, supplies for the "Ocean In a Bottle," such as: sand, glitter, shells, mineral oil, water, food coloring. • Technology: Computers, projector via Smart Board or equivalent • Student: Textbook, writing utensil, clear, labeless bottle • Community: pollution and climate efforts • Language Supports: Interactive Notebook This content is being brought to you by the Ward's World, Science By You program.
