+ ward ' s science Page 1 Enriching Case Studies with Hands-On Lab: Blood Typing Submitted by: Tanya C. Recommended Grade Level(s): Appropriate for: Grades 9 – 12 Teaching Topics & Concepts: ABO blood typing, punnett squares, multiple alleles Standards: HS.LS3-1: Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in the coding instructions and characteristic traits passed from parents to offspring. Time Requirements: Two 80 minute class periods Description: Students will be conducting a case study in which a female patient is pregnant with twins. The students find out through a blood typing activity the blood types of babies and the fathers. The students perform punnett squares and determine that one baby is from one father and the other baby from a different father. This is called Heteropaternal superfecundation. Students will need basic knowledge of punnett squares, sterile technique and blood typing. I use this as a way to do a final assessment on their abilities to do punnett squares and lab technique on blood typing.
