Light Color Effect on Photosynthesis
Grade Level: Grade 9
Discipline: Biology
Standards:
NGSS: HS-LS1-5. Use a model to illustrate how photosynthesis transforms light energy into stored chemical energy. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on illustrating inputs and outputs of matter and the transfer and transformation of energy in photo-synthesis by plants and other photosynthesizing organisms. Examples of models could include diagrams, chemical equations, and conceptual models.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include specific biochemical steps.]
We know that photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy to chemical energy, and that the white light you see is a combination of colors, called the light spectrum. The following activity is a test to determine what the impact of different light colors has on the rate of photosynthesis.
