Light Color Effect on Photosynthesis
Submitted by: Christina M.
Recommended Grade Level(s):
Appropriate for: 9th grade
Teaching Topics & Concepts:
Biology, photosynthesis, energy, chemical equations.
Standards:
NGSS: HS-LS1-5. Use a model to illustrate how photosynthesis transforms light energy into stored chemical energy.
[Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on illustrating inputs and outputs of matter and the transfer and transformation of energy
in photosynthesis by plants and other photosynthesizing organisms. Examples of models could include diagrams, chemical
equations, and conceptual models.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include specific biochemical steps.]
Time Requirements:
2–3 days. Set up day one, data collection on day 2 or 3 so photosynthesis can take place.
Materials:
• Five 500 mL beakers
• 5 funnels (glass works best)
• Five 25 mL graduated cylinders
• 5 samples of aquatic plants
