CTE Healthcare Escape Room Activity (continued) Station 8: Silent Diagnosis Students measure their own pulse at rest and after brief exercise. They compare their data to a patient chart and identify which patient's pulse pattern is unrealistic. The associated patient ID is the code to unlock the next station. Station 8: "Silent Diagnosis" (Revised) Tools Used: • Stethoscope (optional—for realism) • Stopwatch or timer (smartphone is fine) • Printed Patient Pulse Chart • Students' own radial pulse (or neck/carotid pulse) Learning Focus: • Measuring pulse rate at rest and after physical activity • Recognizing how heart rate changes in response to exertion • Using data to identify implausible or tampered chart entries Scenario: "Vital Records Discrepancy!" • Several patient charts were logged during a busy ER shift, but one seems suspicious—their recorded resting and post-activity pulse rates don't make physiological sense. • Your team must gather real pulse rate data and determine which chart entry is flawed. The ID number in that patient's record holds the key to your next clue. Materials Needed: • Timer or stopwatch • Printed Patient Pulse Chart (5–6 entries) – Each includes resting pulse, post-activity pulse, and patient ID • Optional: stethoscope to simulate auscultation • Space to do light exercise (e.g., jumping jacks, wall pushups, running in place for 30 seconds) Student Instructions: 1. Measure your resting pulse (beats per minute) by counting beats for 15 seconds and multiplying by 4. 2. Have one or two team members do 30 seconds of light exercise, then immediately measure their elevated pulse. 3. Review the patient chart and compare it to what you observed. 4. Identify which patient's pulse data is physiologically unrealistic. 5. Use that patient's ID number to unlock your next challenge. + ward ' s science 13
