Turn the paper to 'red' when you arrive and flip it over to 'green' when you are done. Place the cow magnets near the electric field demonstrators. Move the magnets around so you can see how the iron filings move with the magnets. Put a magnet inside the tube-shaped field to observe. Place a magnet on top of the flat field and move the magnet back and forth to observe. Answer the questions about what you observed on your worksheet. Station 2: Cow Magnets-feel the force: Remember: you have 4 minutes maximum at each lab station. Turn the paper to 'red' when you arrive and flip it over to 'green' when you are done. Each of you pick up a pair (2) of the cow magnets. Do NOT drop them or hit them on the table or anything else. Turn them so they are repelling each other and feel the strength of the magnetic force. Answer the questions about what your observed on your worksheet. Station 3: Simple Electric Motors: Remember: you have 4 minutes maximum at each lab station. Turn the paper to 'red' when you arrive and flip it over to 'green' when you are done. BE VERY GENTLE with the coils of wire in this experiment. The motors will work best if the wires sticking out from the loop are straight. Take care not to bend these wires. You may want to look at the pictures on the cardboard directions. Each of you take a simple motor out of the bin and place it in front of you. Gently place the wires sticking out from the loop of wire into the supports sticking up from the motor. Be careful not to shake the battery, magnet, or supports loose. If the coil of wire does not im- mediately start to spin, GENTLY spin the coil of wire. If it does not continue to spin, try gently spinning it in the opposite direction. Again, it works best if the coil is centered and the wires sticking out are straight. Once you get one spinning, observe it and think about what is happening. Then read and answer the questions on your worksheet. There are also trouble shooting tips on the cardboard. Station 4: Levitating Magnets: Remember: you have 4 minutes maximum at each lab station. Turn the paper to 'red' when you arrive and flip it over to 'green' when you are done. Observe the 'all black' ring magnet stand. Be gentle with the magnets. Take out the colored ring magnet stands and move the magnets around so they are 'levitating' like the black magnets on the stand. Then answer the questions on your worksheet.
