Marvelous Magnets: An Exploration
of Electromagnetism with Lab Stations
Submitted by: Amy L.
Recommended Grade Level(s):
Appropriate for: Grades 8–9 Physical Science
Time Requirements:
Prep Time: 10–20 minutes
Activity Time: 40 minutes plus explanation (5–10 minutes) and post-activity discussion (5-15 minutes)
Teaching Topics & Concepts:
Magnetism and electromagnetism
National Science Standards Alignment
MS-PS2-5. Conduct an investigation and evaluate the experimental design to provide evidence that fields exist between
objects exerting forces on each other even though the objects are not in contact.
MS-PS2-3. Ask questions about data to determine the factors that affect the strength of electric and magnetic forces.
HS-PS2-5. Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that an electric current can produce a magnetic field and
that a changing magnetic field can produce an electric current.
Safety:
Be sure to stress being careful with the items used in the lab, so as not to break them. Be careful not to pinch fingers between the
neodymium magnets.
Materials:
• Cow magnet and magnetic field demonstrator (iron filings inside plastic-flat & tube-shaped)
• 6 cow magnets
• 3 World's Simplest Electric Motor Kits and 3 D batteries
• Levitating ring magnets on a stand
• Magnetic putty and magnet
• Sticky Stones magnets
• Neodymium magnet(s) and a $1 bill
• Water clock
• Student worksheets and lab station directions
