Owl Pellets and Food Chains

Food chains and owl pellet dissection.
National Science Standards Alignment
5-LS2-1. Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.
[Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the idea that matter that is not food (air, water, decomposed materials in soil) is changed by
plants into matter that is food. Examples of systems could include organisms, ecosystems, and the Earth.]
Materials:
• Owl pellets
• Owl pellet chart
• Tweezers
• Newspaper to cover table
Background:
Students will research the food chain of an owl. Students will be working in partners. Then they will dissect the owl pellet. They
will analyze the owl pellet, and determine what the owl ate. They will compare the bones on the chart. Students will then com-
pare their findings with another group.
