14-13 The trade winds (yellow) blow toward the west near the Equator, while the prevailing westerlies (white) blow east toward the polar zones. These winds push the surface waters along, creating great circular gyres (blue) in each ocean basin north and south of the Equator. The wind patterns and ocean gyres result from the Coriolis effect.
