14B Currents: Surface Currents: are currents set in motion by global winds. They tend to follow steady global winds called prevailing winds. ➢ The two sets of prevailing winds that most affect the surface currents are the prevailing westerlies, and the trade winds. These winds blow at an angle from the east toward the equator and force surface waters west. ➢ Westerlies blow from the west and toward the poles of the earth, moving surface waters east. Surface currents are usually long-lasting ocean features that can transport water long distances.
