+ ward ' s science Page 3 Neuroreceptor Interception: How Medications Work Miracle Berry Lab Report (student handout continued) Materials • 1 Miracle Berry per participant • Foods that have a dominant sour flavor—examples include: - Lemon/lime juice - Whole citrus fruit - Granny Smith apples - Sour candy such as Warheads or Sour Patch Kids - Salt and vinegar flavor chips - Pickles • Water to cleanse your palate between tastes • Some bread or crackers - Since these foods have extreme pH levels, it is a good idea to have some neutral food your stomach before beginning the experiment. Step-by-Step Procedure: 1. First, set out all the needed materials on clean plates and cups. Make sure to have a cup of water ready. 2. Next, write your hypothesis for how each food will taste, both regularly and after your sour receptors have been inhibited by the Miracle Berry. - What would it taste like if it didn't taste sour? - Do not taste each food/drink at this step, but write down notes on how it smells, looks, feel, etc. Be descriptive in your writing - use all the vocabulary at your disposal to be distinct and specific. - If you need ideas, consult these two resources: Food Words and Macmillan. 3. Taste each food and record the flavors upon tasting them. Be clear and descriptive. 4. After tasting every food and drink: - Drink more water to cleanse your palate and put the Miracle Berry in your mouth. - Do not swallow it. - Let it sit on your tongue and swirl it around your mouth, making sure to cover your entire tongue. - Directions should be found on the box the Miracle Berry is shipped in. 5. Repeat step 3, tasting the same foods and drinks being sure to record the taste. The taste may be altered due to the miracle berry's properties.
