+ ward ' s science Page 1 Physics Projectile Project Submitted by: Dylan F.. Recommended Grade Level(s): Appropriate for: Grades 10–12 Teaching Topics & Concepts: Physics, projectile motion, circular motion. Standards: Key concepts/Big Ideas: • Projectile motion is broken down into vertical and horizontal components of velocity, acceleration, displacement, time and angle of launch. • Projectiles are defined as objects that are thrown, fired, or initially launched, but have no means of accelerating in the horizontal component after launch. • The engineering design process will be utilized to determine the optimal combination of baking soda and vinegar to reach the maximum height and range of the projectile. Objectives: Students will be able to: a. Calculate the time to reach maximum height using the frames per second of the video camera used to record the event. b. Calculate the maximum height of the projectile using h = 4.9t2. c. Collect data to determine the optimal combination of baking soda & vinegar for the projectile to reach its maximum height. d. Calculate the theoretical range of the projectile given a launch angle. e. Graph angle of launch vs. range using data collected in the investigation. f. Analyze the results of the graph to determine the best launch angle for the greatest range of the projectile. g. Calculate the percent difference between theoretical range and experimental range of the projectile. Benchmarks: 9–12 a. The change in motion (direction or speed) of an object is proportional to the applied force and inversely proportional to mass b. An unbalanced force acting on an object changes its speed or direction of motion, or both. c. In most familiar situations frictional forces complicate the description of motion, although the basic principles still apply.
