Motion Activities
Complete each activity and fill in the information as you discover it. We will be using these activities to learn the vocabulary and
concepts and check our work through sharing and discussion, so be sure to use a pencil and PAY attention so that you can learn
from your mistakes.
Directions:
All matter is constantly in motion, from the revolution of the planets around stars to the movement of electrons around a
nucleus in atoms. In this activity, you will learn to identify characteristics of motion and describe them accurately.
1. What is motion?
Procedure:
Step 1: At your lab station. Observe the ball provided while it is sitting on the table. Is it in motion? Why or why not?
Step 2: Slowly roll the ball from the starting tape to the ending tape. Is the ball in motion? Why or why not?
Step 3: Carefully, toss the ball one foot in the air and catch it. Is the ball in motion when it is in the air?Why or why not?
Based on the above activities, describe motion without using the words MOVING, MOVEMENT, or MOTION.

A few words about UNITS
Why are the units of measurement so important?
Knowing the units of measurement that correspond with a number can give you so much more information than a digit sitting
there by itself. Units can:
• Help to show another person the exact amount you have;
• Assist in solving a mathematical problem, especially in science, where you can follow the units to get to the answer;
• Show which measurement system the person is using (i.e. metric or standard).
In a nutshell, the unit of measurement in science serves as the supporting information that gives the number meaning.

Units are required to receive credit for answer, calculation or data, because without the units, the number does
not give enough imformation to be complete.
