Recommended Grade Level(s): Appropriate for: Grades 9 – 12 Teaching Topics & Concepts: Practice writing formulas and naming compounds. Materials: • Dice Templates • Crayons • Scissors • Game Worksheet Background Information, Activity Setup: This interactive activity is wonderful for helping kids practice writing formulas and naming compounds. It is hands-on and engaging. It also fosters group work and can be used in both upper and lower level chemistry. Step-by-Step Procedure: 1. Working in pairs, students fill out the ions putting one ion on each square/side and then color it. 2. They then carefully cut out the templates on the BOLD lines, then fold on dotted lines and tape to secure it in a cube shape. 3. Game play begins and the students roll both an anion and cation and record the ions they rolled, name the compound and write the formula for the compound 4. It helps to have an example to show the kids when giving directions. Teaching Notes: • This is a fun activity that the kids really enjoy making and coloring the dice for. • You can give the kids premade templates with the ions already on them for the dice to save time. • It is a fun and interactive activity for understanding how to write and name formulas which students often struggle with. • I found Dice with whiteboard sides that you can write on that works too.
