26. Keep your work area clean and free of clutter to prevent fire hazards.
27. Do not reach over or across an open flame or active heat source.
28. When heating liquids, always point the open end of a test tube away from yourself and others
because contents may boil or splatter unexpectedly.
29. Never heat chemicals or materials in a closed container because pressure buildup may cause
it to burst or explode.
30. Assume all heated containers and materials are hot. Do not touch or pass heated items directly.
Use tongs, heat-resistant gloves, or other appropriate tools.
31. Know and follow evacuation routes and emergency procedures for fire or heat-related emergencies.
E. Chemical Safety
32. Never touch, taste, or directly smell chemicals. If instructed to detect an odor, use the wafting
technique by gently fanning vapors toward your nose. Never inhale directly from a container.
33. Use only the chemicals specified in the experiment. Do not substitute, combine, or mix chemicals
unless directed by the teacher.
34. Read all chemical labels carefully before use and verify them a second time before handling.
35. Report all chemical spills to the teacher immediately.
36. Dispose of chemicals only as instructed by the teacher. Do not pour chemicals into the sink or place
chemicals in the trash unless directed.
37. Handle acids and bases with extra care. Always add acid to water, never water to acid.
38. If a chemical comes into contact with your skin, eyes, or clothing, rinse immediately with
water as directed for the exposure and notify the teacher right away.
39. Always use a pipette bulb or pump. Never pipette by mouth.
F. Glassware and Sharp-Object Safety
40. Inspect glassware before use. Do not use cracked, chipped, or broken glassware. Report damaged
items to the teacher and dispose of them only in designated containers.
41. Never force glass tubing into a stopper. Use a lubricant and a gentle twisting motion when instructed
to insert the glass into the stoppers or tubing.
42. When heating glassware, use a wire gauze, ceramic screen, or other teacher-directed method
to distribute heat evenly and help prevent breakage.
43. After cutting glass, ensure sharp edges are smoothed or fire-polished before use, as directed
by the teacher.
