Page 2 11. Keep your work area clean, organized, and free of clutter. Clean up immediately after completing your work or as directed by the teacher. 12. Report all spills, accidents, injuries, breakage, unsafe conditions, or near misses to the teacher immediately. Do not attempt cleanup unless instructed. 13. Do not eat, drink, chew gum, apply cosmetics, or place any object in your mouth in the science laboratory unless specifically instructed by the teacher for an approved activity. 14. Know the location and proper use of all safety equipment, including the eyewash station, safety shower, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, fire blanket, fire alarms, exits, and emergency evacuation routes. 15. Keep your hands away from your face while working and wash your hands thoroughly after completing all laboratory activities. 16. Handle all living organisms, specimens, and preserved materials responsibly and with respect. 17. Inform the teacher before participating if you have a medication, allergy, medical condition, injury, vision or hearing concern, mobility concern, or other factors that may affect safe participation, especially when operating equipment, using chemicals, handling biological materials, or conducting lab activities. 18. Successfully complete all required safety instructions before participating in laboratory activities. When required by the school or teacher, students must demonstrate competency and achieve 100% on required safety assessments before using specified apparatus, equipment, tools, machines, or hazardous materials. C. Personal Protective Equipment and Proper Dress 19. Wear safety goggles and any other required personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, aprons, lab coats, face shields, or heat-resistant gloves, as directed by the teacher. 20. PPE must be worn correctly for the full time it is required. Improper use of PPE, removing PPE without permission, or failure to wear required PPE may result in removal from the activity until the issue is corrected and the teacher determines it is safe to continue. 21. Dress appropriately for the science laboratory. Tie back long hair, secure loose clothing, and remove dangling jewelry during laboratory work. 22. Wear fully enclosed shoes during laboratory work. Sandals, flip-flops, open-toed shoes, and open-heeled shoes are not permitted. D. Fire and Heat Safety 23. Always wear required PPE before using an open flame or heat source. 24. Follow proper procedures for lighting, adjusting, and extinguishing a burner. 25.
