Predicting pigments: a biology activity for fall

Biology activity for fall – Chromatography lesson plan

High School

If you’re looking for a great biology activity for fall, then this one will “leave” you feeling satisfied. That’s right: your students (or you) will be collecting leaves. They’ll also be honing their hypothesis-formation skills and powers of prediction.

This activity will give your students hands-on experience with cellular components, photosynthesis, and chromatography—using different-colored leaves that have been collected. The activity takes just 15 to 20 minutes of prep. Just make sure the leaves are diverse, with high water content (dry leaves won’t do). Time to explore.
