When crisp fall temperatures and scents start to fill the air, it’s time for green leaves to make their annual passage to brilliant reds, oranges and yellows. But how and why does this change take place?

This simple lab activity for elementary students introduces them to the knowledge that the plant pigments responsible for this dazzling display are hidden in leaves all year long, waiting to make their appearance in autumn.
