Students prepare the growing area and place the medium before planting. • PS.03.02.04.a–b: Observe and record environmental conditions during germination and growth, and determine whether conditions need adjustment. The activity supports Plant Systems concepts related to environmental factors affecting plant growth, growing media, plant growth observations, and hydroponic or soilless plant production. It also incorporates problem-solving, safe use of materials and tools, systems thinking, and evaluation of agricultural production designs. Teacher Background: What Are Chinampas? Chinampas are an agricultural system associated with the shallow lake environments of the Valley of Mexico. Farmers constructed highly productive growing areas in shallow waters, using layers of vegetation, mud, and soil, with canals running between cultivated plots. The surrounding water helped support irrigation and intensive agricultural production. Chinampas are sometimes referred to as "floating gardens," but that term can be misleading. Rather than floating freely on the water, mature chinampas were constructed as growing plots built within shallow lake environments. This distinction provides an important discussion point for the activity. The classroom models students create are inspired by the ideas behind chinampas rather than intended as historically accurate replicas. Chinampas and modern hydroponic systems are also not the same technology. Chinampas rely on soil and organic matter, whereas hydroponic systems generally grow plants without soil, delivering water and nutrients to plant roots in other ways. The classroom model in this activity is inspired by some chinampa design principles but is not itself a hydroponic system unless plants are grown without soil and receive nutrients through a nutrient solution. However, both provide useful examples of agricultural innovation. They invite students to consider a common question: How can growers design systems that make effective use of water, space, nutrients, and other available resources to produce plants?
