+ ward ' s science Page 1 Building Energy Transfer Systems Submitted by: Robert S. Recommended Grade Level(s): Appropriate for: Grades 6–8 Time Requirements: Prep Time: 45 minutes (one time) Activity Time: 40 minutes Teaching Topics & Concepts: Types of Energy: electrical, mechanical, light, chemical, potential, & kinetic National Science Standards Alignment CMS-PS3-5: Construct, use, and present arguments to support the claim that when the kinetic energy of an object changes, energy is transferred to or from the object. (Energy and Matter) Safety: • Students should be forewarned that any lamp with an incandescent bulb will become hot. • Batteries hooked up to itself (from one end to the other) with just a single wire will short circuit and become hot. Materials: • Size D battery (per group) • 2 alligator clip wires (per group) • Small motor with toy fan blade on the end; small, inexpensive, & safe (per group) • Hand-crank generator (per group) • Solar panel; small & inexpensive (per group) • Lamp with incandescent bulb (if sunlight is not available) • Rubber bands Background Information, Activity Setup: Students will build 3 different energy systems as well as draw them out & label the types of energy changes. Each time the small, toy fan will spin on the small motor. Power will come from the hand-crank generator, the D cell battery, as well as from the small solar panel. Discussions will ensure regarding the types of energy as well as any indications of potential &/on kinetic energies. This content is being brought to you by the Ward's World, Science By You program.
