Pucks to Socks
Submitted by: Tahreen C.
Recommended Grade Level(s):
Appropriate for: Grades 11–12 students who are taking Honors or CP Physics
Time Requirements:
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Activity Time: 60 minutes
Teaching Topics & Concepts:
Constant velocity, acceleration, Newton's 2nd law and force of kinetic friction.
National Science Standards Alignment
Science: Physical Science
Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions
5.HS.PS2.1. Analyze data to support the claim that Newton's second law of motion describes the mathematical relationship among
the net FORCE on a macroscopic object, its mass, and its acceleration.
Safety:
• Students should have extra pair of socks so they can change after the activity
• Other students should be around to spot the person sliding/skidding.
• Student should practice a few runs with slower speed before attempting a faster starting speed.
Materials:
Students will have the options to choose any of the following materials as they see fit:
• Meter sticks
• Timer (or their phone)
• Extra pair of socks
• Motion sensor (Vernier or Pasco)
Background Information, Activity Setup:
Prior to this activity, the students have already learned kinematics and part of dynamics units of physics. Given the prompt, they
should know to create a scenario where kinetic friction should be the only force acting on the object of interest. Students should
also know that for there to be kinetic friction, the object of interest has to be moving against the surface in question. Following are
equations that will be needed:

F
kinetic friction = µ
