Appropriate for: Grade 8 – 12
Time Requirements:
Activity Time: 35 – 40 minutes

This activity is designed as a reinforcement and review of ionic and covalent bonds, both in writing names and formulas.
National Science Standards Alignment
HS-PS1-3.
Materials:
• Notebook paper
• Chalk markers
• Lab tables
• Periodic table
Background:
Students should understand the following concepts and discuss before the activity:
Ionic Compounds:
• Ionic compounds are made of charged ions
• Ionic compounds are formed between a metal and a non-metal
• The charge of an ionic compound must equal zero
• Because of the charged ions, ionic compounds can conduct electricity when dissolved in water
Covalent Compounds:
• Covalent compounds are formed between two nonmetals
• Covalent compounds share electrons
• Because they share electrons, covalent compounds cannot conduct electricity when dissolved in water
