Gummy Bear Dissection Lab

Time Requirements:
Activity Time: 45 – 60 minutes
Teaching Topics & Concepts:
In this lab, students will be able to model the various terminology used to identify anatomical position.
National Science Standards Alignment
• 2.3.1. Build and decipher medical term meanings by identifying and using word elements (e.g., word roots, prefixes, suffixes,
combining forms).
• Proficient: Can identify anatomical position and explain all the related terminology in detail.
• In Progress: Cannot identify anatomical position but can explain all the related terminology in detail.
• Not Met: Cannot identify anatomical position or explain all the related terminology in detail.
Materials:
• 10 gummy bears per student
• 1 razor blade/scapel per student
• 1 sheet of 8 ½ x 11" white paper (dissection surface)
• Transparent tape
Safety:
• Students will also need basic safety instruction with using scapels and how to cut in the proper direction (not towards them).
• Safety glasses are required as well due to scapel usage.
