Making Waves
Submitted by: Miranda K.
Recommended Grade Level(s):
Appropriate for: Grade 9
Teaching Topics & Concepts:
Earth Science & Geology, energy of waves, waver interactions
Teaching Topics & Concepts:
• Waves
• Refraction, reflection, diffraction, absorption, superposition
• Radiant energy and the electromagnetic spectrum
• Doppler shift
Standards:
Ohio standard alignment:
PW.EW.3.
Time Requirements:
Two 40 minute class periods (75–80 minutes total). One period to intro/set up the activity (rules, spaces used, review terms,
assign groups, practice activity), and the second period to perfect the various wave interactions to be able to reproduce them,
film, and analyze the film.
Materials:
• 6–7 Super springs
• Large area or space
Background Information, Activity Setup:
This is a general activity for Physical Science on waves. Students will look at topics such as energy of a wave, the various wave
interactions (refraction, reflection, diffraction and interference). Students will also use vocabulary, definitions, contextual reading
from textbooks. Videos can also help teach this concept.
