+ ward ' s science Page 2 Nutrient Deficiencies Hydroponics Lab Lesson Plan (continued) Content Statements: Students will be able to: • Identity all controls in indoor agriculture • Understand and apply general greenhouse management techniques, specifically for hydroponics Lessons, Seminars, & Activities: Emphasis: Importance of record keeping and data collection within a hydroponics lab/facility Nutrient Solution: Activities to show how each of these concepts rely on one another to create a cohesive/optimal growing environment • Water Temperature • EC • pH Lecture: Temperature importance of nutrient solution: An increase in root temperature has a greater effect on the absorption/volume flow of nutrients 1. Temperature determines the rate of ion transport from roots, to be released into the xylem – Plants uptake nutrients in the form of ions PH and EC Relationships Anticipatory set (T/F statements), readings: introduction and pH management reading Discussion: • Recap pH, understand what the pH's are of the grow media being used in the lab (perlite, rockwool, hydroton, coco coir) and test with pH test strips for analysis. • Understanding EC reading and how salt (nutrients) influences the conductivity of water video Assignment: • Write down 2 pieces of information that are interesting, new, etc on your notecard from the video (10 minutes) • Write down 2 more pieces of info from this article after reading: doc on your notecard (10 minutes) • With your partner (2 people/group only!!), list your names on the slides, discuss your findings, choose the pieces of information you wish to share with classmates (share what you wrote on notecard and place on your slides) (~ 5 minutes). Research • The hydroponic nutrients, choose 2 specific nutrients and represent their deficiencies. • Describe how the deficiency impacts the plant/what the symptoms are, which part(s) of the plant are affected by deficiency, what does the plant use the nutrient for? (~15 minutes) • Can include: Pictures, descriptions, etc…share with classmates! • We will be presenting information today
