What can you do to reduce the amount of food waste in your home?
Day 7:
Connect the dots by discussing the vocabulary: food mile, carbon emissions, and climate change. This class period will be spent
debating these topics and what we have learned so far. Students will be divided into two teams. The debate question will be:
Does our carbon footprint affect climate change?
Students will be given the side they will have to debate. The debate rules will be:
1. Everyone on your team must speak before you speak a second time.
2. You must stand to speak.
3. You must face your opponent.
4. If two people stand on your team to speak you must non verbally decide who will sit and who will speak.
5. If your opponent raises a new reason or answer, then the opposing team must respond to that new topic before starting a
new argument.
Day 8:
Students will discuss how to build a structure around the compost pile. Using a tape measure students will calculate how many
cinder blocks will be needed to build the structure.
Students will walk to the maintenance building on our campus and carry the correct number of cinder blocks to the compost area.
Students will build the structure. Straw bale will be placed in the corner of the structure and the pitchfork will be used to turn the
compost as needed.
Day 9:
Students will begin to use the 2 green composting buckets to put their food waste in after lunch each day. A Green Team will be
assembled to take the bucket of food waste to the compost pile daily. The Green Team members will rotate throughout the school
year so every student can join in taking responsibility for the care of the compost pile.
