+ ward ' s science Page 3 Part II: Claim & Materials Testing: Scientific Question: What materials are suitable for the soles of shoes? Purpose: To determine the coefficient of friction of some common pairs of materials. Make a claim based upon the coefficient of friction of the materials and their effectiveness as a shoe sole: Materials: • Wooden plank • Friction blocks • Spring scale • Electronic Scale Guidelines to Testing: Your actual test procedure will be left to your group to devise. 1. Use the wooden plank for the bottom surface. Do NOT drag the friction block on the table. 2. Record your block and runway number in case you need to come back tomorrow. 3. Place a weight (textbook, brass weight, etc.) on top of your friction block so your measurements will be easier to read on the spring scale. 4. Measurements will be in NEWTONs ONLY! 5. Always zero the scale before using it. 6. Fill in the data table below as you test…Do calculations on a separate sheet of paper! 7. The coefficient of friction relies on two surfaces…don't forget to mention one. Block #: _________ Plank #: _________ Example: The most suitable material for the shoe bottom is rubber.
