Newton's Laws Stations Activity
Race Track (student handout)
Materials:
• 2 Hot Wheels Cars
• Triple beam balance
• Race track
• Timer
Based upon what you know about Newton's laws, which car should accelerate
the fastest and why?
Hypothesis:
Using this information, form a hypothesis that includes your reasoning. You can use the following template…
Based upon Newton's ________________________________________________law,
the ________________________________________________car should accelerate faster
than the ___________________________________________ car because____________________________________________.
TEST IT.
1. Weigh each car and record its mass in the data table.
2. Measure the length of the track
3. Have one person ready to time how long it takes each car to reach the end of the track.
4. Place one of the cars at the top of the ramp and let it go. Repeat three times and find the average time for the first car.
5. Repeat for the second car.
6. Explain your results using Newton's laws.
Car Mass (g) Mass (kg) Time 1 (sec) Time 2 (sec) Time 3 (sec) Average Time(s)
