Recommended Grade Level(s): Appropriate for: Middle and High School Teaching Topics & Concepts: This activity is about Earth and Its place in the universe. Students are examining the other planets in the solar system and discovering what makes them NOT habitable planets. This then allows the students to come up with creative solutions to make the planet they are researching habitable and then present those creative solutions in a persuasive manner through their marketing materials. This project could have a place in both HS and MS based on the standards alignment. Standards: Middle School Alignment MS-ESS1. MS-ESS1-3. Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system NGSS Science and Engineering Practices Analyze and interpret data to determine similarities and differences in findings NGSS Disciplinary Core Idea The solar system consists of the sun and a collection of objects, including planets, their moons, and asteroids that are held in orbit around the sun by its gravitational pull on them. (MS-ESS1-2), (MS-ESS1-3) High School Alignment NGSS Science and Engineering Practices Communicate scientific ideas (e.g. about phenomena and/or the process of development and the design and performance of a proposed process or system) in multiple formats (including orally, graphically, textually, and mathematically). (HS-ESS1-3) NGSS Crosscutting Concepts Science assumes the universe is a vast single system in which basic laws are consistent. (HS-ESS1-2) Common Core State Standards Connections—ELA/Literacy WHST.9-12.1 Write arguments focused on discipline-specific content. (HS-ESS1-6) SL.11-12.4 Present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with relevant evidence, sound valid reasoning, and well-chosen details; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
