+ ward ' s science Page 2 Separating Solids (student handout) Materials: • Mixture (in baggie) • Sieve cups • Small cups (4) • Magnet (in baggie) • Piece of Paper • Procedure: 1. Your goal is to separate 4 distinct solids from your mixture. 2. You must fill each of your 4 cups with a different solid obtained from the mixture and record how you had to separate them out of the mixture in the chart. 3. To start, lay out the 4 cups on your table. 4. Open the baggie with the mixture and empty it into one of the cups. 5. When using the magnet, leave it in the bag when you use it, it will save you clean up time. 6. When using the sieve cups, make sure you place a piece of paper underneath it while you filter the solids out. 7. Before you return all of the solids back to your bag — take a PICTURE of the separated substances and paste it in the space below, then return the mixture to the original bag and return materials: What is the solid? Describe how you separated the solid from the mixture. Give a physical property of the solid (size, color, etc) 1 2 3 4 Add picture here
