Page 1 Student Safety Acknowledgment Science Laboratory and Classroom Safety Acknowledgment This document applies to all science and classroom laboratories, and approved home-lab activities assigned by the teacher. Students, parents/guardians, and teachers/instructors should review the full acknowledgment before any participation in laboratory activities. A. Hazards and Materials Students May Encounter Depending on the activity, students may encounter hazards or materials that require careful handling and strict adherence to teacher instructions, including but not limited to: • Chemicals, including acids, bases, solutions, indicators, and other reagents • Glassware, including test tubes, beakers, flasks, slides, coverslips, and thermometers • Heat sources, including burners, hot plates, heated water, heated containers, and flame-related apparatus • Electrical devices, power sources, cords, probes, sensors, and other electrical equipment • Biological specimens, living organisms, preserved materials, cultures, or related supplies • Sharp tools or edges, including scalpels, probes, scissors, blades, broken glass, and cutting tools • Laboratory apparatus, equipment, tools, models, measuring devices, and other instructional materials B. General Safety Expectations 1. Read and understand the entire procedure before beginning any science laboratory work. 2. Be familiar with the properties and hazards of all chemicals, materials, tools, and equipment you will use. 3. Follow all safety rules, teacher instructions, posted procedures, and emergency directions at all times. 4. Always behave respectfully and responsibly. Fooling around, horseplay, practical jokes, distracting others, or other unsafe conduct are prohibited because they can cause injuries. 5. Do not enter the science laboratory, classroom laboratory area, storage area, or preparation area unless a teacher or authorized supervisor is present and has given permission. 6. Never work alone in the science laboratory. Unauthorized or unsupervised work is prohibited. 7. Perform only experiments and activities assigned or approved by the teacher. Do not conduct unauthorized activities, demonstrations, or variations. 8. Handle or operate equipment only when instructed by the teacher and only after you understand the safe operating procedures. 9. Use all equipment, apparatus, tools, chemicals, biological materials, and other materials only for their intended purpose and in accordance with safety training and teacher instructions. 10. Do not remove chemicals, specimens, materials, tools, or equipment from the science laboratory unless specifically permitted by the teacher. + ward ' s science
