Follow-up Teaching Notes:
• The concentrated sulfuric acid will act as a catalyst, and as a dehydrating agent for the condensation reaction between the
alcohol and carboxylic acid.
• If the ester odor is difficult to discern, you can pour the mixture into water in a small beaker.
Disposal/Clean-up:
• If local safety and environmental regulations do not prohibit it, dispose of the esters down the drain with lots of water.
• Chemical disposal should be done in accordance with all local safety and environmental regulations.
